I downloaded alsa-driver 1.0.14 and ran the snddevices script included with it. This generated all the sound devices I think I need but still sound doesn't work. I wondered if the kernel module 'snd-hda-intel' needed to be reloaded and so I ran 'modprobe -r snd-hda-intel' and then 'modprobe snd-hda-intel'. dmesg now reports:
