I downloaded alsa-driver 1.0.14 and ran the snddevices script included
with it. This generated all the sound devices I think I need but still
sound doesn't work. I wondered if the kernel module 'snd-hda-intel'
needed to be reloaded and so I ran 'modprobe -r snd-hda-intel' and then
'modprobe snd-hda-intel'. dmesg now reports:

[ 99.471151] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode...
[ 99.533964] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd
mode...
[ 103.132728] hda_codec: No auto-config is available, default to model=ref
[ 110.313639] hda-intel: no codecs initialized
[ 110.314284] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled

Sound still doesn't work.
