Even though Skype isn't in the Ubuntu repos, all of its dependencies are, except on AMD64. Skype is a 32-bit application which requires 32-bit libraries; Skype does run well on the i386 version of Ubuntu. Its doesn't run on the AMD64 version because a dependency, libsigc++-2.0-0c2a, is missing from the ia32-libs package. On both i386 and AMD64 this dependency can be found in main, but on AMD64 the version in main is only 64-bit. Adding this dependency to the ia32-libs package will allow Skype to run on AMD64.
