Upon further inspection, it seems that fstack-protector-strong was only introduced in gcc 4.9 while 4.8 is still the default for trusty. Thus, I believe the way to fix this problem would be to depend on gcc 4.9 and make some changes to the build system/dkms to force it to use gcc 4.9 instead of the default 4.8. How can this be done, I wonder?
