Hmmm... I wouldn't call the current behavior "acceptable". The photo scope shouldn't show a preview image that's too large. The thumbnailer really has nothing to do with it. It'll produce a thumbnail of pretty much any size very efficiently. This really is a UI bug in the photo scope: the screen layout gets messed up by the too-large preview image. By the looks of things, the photo scope just displays the original image full size. I haven't verified whether it goes to the thumbnailer to obtain the image. But, seeing that it is full size, I suspect it is not.
