Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc-4.2

When you install different versions of gcc, it is not possible to switch
between them using the update-alternatives command.

Steps to reproduce this:
sudo aptitude install gcc-4.1 gcc-4.2
update-alternatives --list gcc

the last command writes that there are no alternatives for gcc.

It would be nice, especially for developers that want to verify errors
or warnings, to quickly change the gcc version that way.

** Affects: gcc-4.2 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
