As stated in <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power- manager/+bug/121833/comments/11>, you can control brightness using hotkeys by adding 'options video no_automatic_changes=0' to some file in /etc/modprobe.d/ and reloading the video module.
