Addition: version 3.5 works with debian/ dir ported from 3.1.2 release, but also fails with debian/ from 3.4, so it seems it's Ubuntu patches break the compatibility. Mercurial 3.5.2-1 from Debian Stretch ( https://packages.debian.org/stretch/mercurial ) breaks hgsubversion as well.
