The above bug fix I mentioned (commenting ide-generic and recreating initrd) works most of the time. But about 1 in 30 boots it fails, unfortunately I haven't been there when it has to see if its the same error message. On each occasion a reboot fixed the problem, so I'm convinced the problem is via v82cxxx driver taking too long and sometime much too long to be initialised (possible not at all - since I've not been there to see)
