It's been a while, but I tried asking about this on the #debian-java irc channel. Someone suggested it might be to avoid the gcj keytool (gcc- snapshot: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj-6-snap-amd64/bin/keytool). It's not clear to me what sort of problems keytool from the gcj package could cause though...
