As I said, display was so badly broken with that kernel that I was
unable to test, though it might have been co-incidence - it has always
been rather temperamental with all the 4.1 and 4.2 kernels I have
tested.  In my few short tests I was unable to get the external monitor
to display anything at all while the X server was active either with or
without the panel open, though a VT worked.  gnome-display-settings (or
whatever it is called) clearly thought that the monitor was enabled
though.  I will give it another test next time I have to reboot anyway.
