@Christopher, thank you for the offer! As it turns out, I don't think the root cause is the kernel. If I switch back to lightdm, I'm able to successfully start X, so I think the messages I'm seeing are the same in this bug, but they aren't the root cause of my particular problem (no greeter, no X).
