The laptop was purchased in February 2015 with Windows 8.1 pre-
installed. A couple of months later, I installed Ubuntu 12.04.2 from a
usb install stick which I had created, alongside the Windows 8.1 system.

The installation worked fine as a dual boot system even though I had to
go to the boot options menu to select Ubuntu until yesterday
(14.09.2015) when the option for Ubuntu from the boot options menu was
not amongst the boot options available!

Therefore, I backed up the files that I required to a usb drive and
proceeded to try a fresh re-install of Ubuntu 14.04.2 alongside Windows
8.1. However, this time, the installation was unsuccessful at the point
of creating the grub configuration file, the installation process
returning a "fatal error" at this stage!

I am now going to try several different options in Terminal given in the
askubuntu.co forum as follows:

Option 1 - sudo grub-install /dev/sda; sudo grub-mkconfig -0
/boot/grub/grub.cfg

Option 2 - sudo apt-get install grub-efi

Option 3 - Type "grub" in Terminal, hit tab a few times, looking for
"grub-efi-install" or "grub2-install" or something ending in "-install"
