I was also able to reproduce this using the same steps and video card.

  I just tried this:
  System->Administration->Screens and Graphics
  
  *ooh shiny*
  
  Clicked Screen 2
  Clicked 'Secondary SCreen'
  Clicked 'Test'
  
  Waited while my LCD went completely black, console, to black a few
  times. Then got a login screen.
  
  Logged in, and poked around a little - not a test session, my main
  session had just been violated in unpleasant ways and existing X clients
  had died.
  
  Xorg.0.log.old and lspci -vvn attached, I presume thats the key thing to
  grab.
