Agree with above. Before the update that broke my Fn brightness keys, software-driven brightness did work. kde-guidance-powermanager has a slider bar that controls brightness when connected to AC/battery, and those worked fine (and still do). I could also control brightness with the keyboard though, which I can't do now.
