I had problems with a Nikon Coolpix 4200 also. Tried the backported libgphoto2-2.4.0 packages from bug #110065, but that was no better. Eventually I worked out that by setting the camera to USB Mass Storage mode, I am able to download photos in gthumb. Not quite as nice as PTP mode, because it needs to be unmounted before unplugging it, but at least the photos download again.
