actually
mv .config/audacious .config/audacious-play-next-bug
solves the problem (although all playlists will be lost)

actually after using diff I found that I had to edit
~/.config/audacious/config

[audacious]
no_playlist_advance=TRUE

obviously this has to be deleted (like when deleting all settings and
starting audacious anew) or set to FALSE.


Actually this option can also be toggled in playlist->no playlist advance 
[Ctrl+N]

this explains why it was suddenly set. I'm used to Ctrl+N for opening a
new window, so then I tried that instead of Ctrl+T for opening a new
playlist. This "bug"/feature was activated ...
