We have observed two problems here.
1. the initrd.gz that comes with the ISO image does not work for
ppc64le.
2. The initrd.gz image at the time of filing this bug fails to
recognize the broadcom network cards on the IBM tuletta ppc64le systems.
At one point during this year there was a 14.04.2 initrd.gz image that
did work and we captured that and have kept a copy..
the file that was posted as of:

This copy obtained earlier this year works:
md5sum initrd.gz
61fc21cced97a2104ca3d768404b122a initrd.gz
However the copy obtained from:
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/trusty-updates/main
/installer-ppc64el/current/images/utopic-netboot/ubuntu-
installer/ppc64el/initrd.gz
fails with the above error. When you go to the command shell and do an
"ip a" you see that it failed to see any NIC cards.
Having a "working" copy of initrd.gz is very very important, and 2. not having
to jump through hoops to deal with ppc64le architectures is also important.
Please get us a working copy of the initrd.gz and make it available on
on the distro CD to make it easier for those doing network provisioning
to set things up.
