I have the same problem with xUbuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) I guess it will never be fixed, so we have to install windows xp instead :(
Laptop: Acer Aspire 3104 (AMD Sempron 3500+) GPU: ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 System : xUbuntu 14.04 32 bit (Trusty Tahr) There is one workaround, but it requires nomodeset (and the quirks suggested by Chris at #65).
