Public bug reported:
I have recently installed Ubuntu 15.04 and found I'm having trouble with
multiple pulseaudio processes being launched.
LightDM will launch pulseaudio at startup, which is then used for system
sounds, and other applications, including:
* Audacity
* Audacious
* Adobe Flash Player
* Totem video player
* System sound settings speaker test dialogue
MPD on the other hand, uses another pulseaudio process. This seems to be
independent of the following output options: pulse, alsa and
libao/pulse.
The problem with this is: if MPD is outputting audio, all of the system sounds
and other apps listed above will not be able to, I presume while the
lightdm-launched pulseaudio process waits until it can get access to the audio
device. My audio device is an onboard Realtek that does not support hardware
mixing.
I didn't have this issue in previous versions of Ubuntu, and have
maintained the same mpd config since at least 12.04.
I'm not sure what other information or tests to conduct, but an easy way
to reproduce it is this:
Boot Ubuntu 15.04, start playing sound with the default video player.
Then, start mpd and play sound with that, nothing should come from mpd.
Once other sounds stop from the video player and system, mpd should be
able to play. Then, system sounds wont be played. It takes about 10
seconds for the changeover between pulseaudio processes once audio stops
on the one which has access to the sound device.
