This is the only way I was successful, running Plasma 5.3 via the backports (http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu vivid main):
1. Kickoff -> Applications -> Internet -> IM Client (Empathy) and initialize the application 2.
