Also downloaded and installed same version (4.1.0-040100rc1-generic) as suggested on an older MacBook (plastic, late 2007 - 64-bit). Boots up all fine here! So, for me the bug is fixed, but - as stated by monochromec - not for the newer MacBook 8.1 series.
