Dear Chris, Thank you for the update. However, I had already taken the following steps to resolve the issue.
First, i took a backup of my data. Then I did afresh install of the OS. The installation did not cause any problems, but on removing my bootable Pen drive and booting from the newly installed OS, the problem persisted. Then I thought this might be and issue with the BIOS. Hence I downloaded the latest version of the bios and upgraded my netbook. Since then, the problem has disappeared.
