Public bug reported:

I installed Gutsy last week and backlight, hibernate and suspend were
working perfectly on my laptop :) the only thing that wasn't working was
the FN keys.

Since a kernel update this week, the backlight dimming doesn't work from
within guidance-power-manager. Last week I was able to move the sliders
in guidance and the screen brightness would dim accordingly straight
away. Now this is not possible. Unplugging the laptop won't dim the
screen either, which was working las week.

Now, for the FN keys I used to use (back in Feisty and Edgy) a modified
sony_acpi module and a program (fsfn) that would read, and then adjust,
screen brightness. This program would do nothing on Gutsy.

Since the kernel update, the FN keys work under fsfn!!! Please note that
I didn't install that modified sony module this time. So I'm wondering
if something has changed in the sony_acpi and sonypi modules in the
kernel that fsfn understands, but guidance-power-manager or hal doesn't.

I don't have anything in "/sys/class/backlight":
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /sys/class/backlight/
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Sony modules seem to be loaded:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod|grep -i sony
sony_laptop 31960 0
sonypi 23960 0
sony_acpi 6668 0

Hibernation and suspend seem to be working fine. Wireless a bit
temperamental after resuming but it's OK. CPU scaling works perfectly.

This is a Kubuntu Gutsy installation, up to date (4 hours since dist-
upgrade and reboot). Today another kernel was installed and the problem
persists. Sony VAIO VGN FS285M, Centrino chipset, Pentium-M 1.7GHz, 1GB
RAM. KDE.
