A few more experiments reveals that the zoom level may determine the appearance of the error, where "zoom to fit the entire project" elicits an error, but stepping down to one level above (repeated "-" zoom) and printing does not cause an error until at the entire-project-fit zoom level. It's not clear that at one level above the entire-project-fit zoom level, indeed the whole project is captured. (Thus, pressing "zoom to fit the entire project" and then "+" zoom before printing would be a workaround of sorts.)
