I tossed out windows for good after this bug.  So I can't test it again.
I'm glad you guys are looking at it - I hope it doesn't bite anyone else.

I was trying to dual boot without wiping out my win xp install at the
time.   Now I have a new machine (Dell XPS 410n) with Ubuntu that has been
ok except for USB scanner not working without lots of hacks :(
