Issue solved by apt-get purge mysql-server-5.6 mysql-server then reinstall. System now working again.

If so, that password might have been saved in apt's configuration/templates, so that it kept failing to run mysql? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1435080 Title: mysql-server upgrade hangs dpkg --reconfigure (if root password is set?)
