Torsten My problem is I think different from the one you are trying to address. I got on the list because someone thought my symptoms were the same but I think they are not. I have a very stable system running Suse 9.3 and KDE on a reasonably new machine with 128 M Ram. This machine then runs X which communicates with X running on Cygwin on my windows machine. This works very well and has cause no problems with firewalls or anything else! I have tried to run both Ubuntu and Fedora both with Gnome on the same machine to no avail. Both run fowl of the windows fire wall and have problems with Gnome (and possibly the Linux Firewall and SELinux). I can only have small bursts of work as the main purpose of the machine is to be the network server and to allow me to develop and support web sites. If I could get a stable connection to either Ubuntu or Fedora I would gladly work with you to try solve the problem but I cannot have the machine off line for long periods. I also have an old 486 machine but that is so strapped for memory that running X is probably out of the question. If I can help please feel free to ask I am quite computer literate as I am a programmer and have worked with C/C++ on Linux.
