Public bug reported: I installed Ubuntu MATE 14.10 on an Acer 1410 and an Acer Aspire One 521. In both cases I discovered that other devices on my network could only be contacted via SSH using their IP address. The remote device name (e.g myLaptop.local) was not recognised either for SSH operations or even a ping.
I checked the Avahi related packages installed on another computer running Mint 17.1, from which remote host names were recognised, and made a list of the packages missing from Ubuntu MATE. These packages were as follows: gnome-user-share libavahi-compat-libdnssd1 libmono-zeroconf1.0-cil avahi-discover avahi-dnsconfd I installed these onto both Acer machines using Synaptic and the problem was solved on both. All devices on my network from then on could be identified by host name as well as IP address. The installation ISO image for Ubuntu MATE 14.10 was downloaded from the official website on 2nd March 2015, around 2100 GMT. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1432235 Title: Avahi installation incomplete on Ubuntu MATE 14.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1432235/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
