Please try Ubuntu 7.04 instead, which is probably more suitable for a
first-time desktop user anyway. I worked around this particular problem
in Ubuntu 6.10:

  * Ignore failures from os.utime on directories. I don't know why I get a
    disproportionate number of reports of this failing, but to be honest I
    don't care enough about directory timestamps to investigate.

Of course there may be some other problem behind this, and without the
logs I can't be sure, but I'd definitely advise you to start by
installing 7.04.
