i select "start or install ubuntu" or "start ubuntu in safe graphics
mode". after ubuntu logo and the horizonal scroll bar and some other
lines of words show up, the screen turn to black. i press enter and the
following line turn up:

to make sure that you have the latest version

the x server is now disabled. restart GDM when it is configured correctly.
