Public bug reported:

npm is already at version 2.5.1 and Ubuntu is still packaging version
1.4.21 which was released in July 2014. Version 2.0 introduced
significant improvements in terms of its run-script functionality and on
other areas. It's a potentially backwards-incompatible upgrade though.

Users can always install the latest npm themselves, but it would be nice
to have a more recent version in the package repository.
