For me the error occurred after updating from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS
(64-bit).

I have 4 OS across 2 HDDs, one containing 2 Windows-7 boots and the main
drive containing 2 Ubuntu boots: 14.04 LTS 64x and 12.04 LTS 32x (rarely
used).

Attempts to soley use apt-get to repair this failed. I haven't made a
serious attempt at fixing it in any other way so far.

As an extra note, I was also missing all of my perl libraries after the
update.
