Sorry for being fuzzy. This is what happens:

# lightdm greeting screen comes up after boot as expected.
# trying to log in from the lightdm greeting screen (with whatever user to 
whatever desktop environment)
# X11 is stopped, screen falls back to vt (black screen with a few white 
characters on it) for half a second or so. There is some output (error message) 
on vt, but there is no time for me to read it.
# lightdm greeting screen is started again. I'm still not logged-in (but I can 
try over and over again).

Work-around:
As already mentioned, logging in is possible by:
# Cntrl-Alt-F2 (or some other combination) to get to a (non-graphical) vt.
# Log in (non-graphical, i.e. without X11, lightdm greeting screen) on the vt
# Starting the X11 user session, e.g. with 'startx /usr/bin/startkde -- :3'
