The issue appears to be fixed in mainline kernel 3.19.0-031900rc3-generic. Under the updated kernel, behaviour is as follows:
- The entire mouse button area of the touchpad acts as a left mouse button - Right mouse button clicking can be achieved through a two-finger tap - Using the trackpad mouse buttons does not lock up the external mouse It would be better if the right hand side of the touchpad mouse button area acted as a right-click action, but that seems like a separate issue. I'm unable to confirm if the issue existed in an older version of Ubuntu - have only tried 14.10.
