I have now upgraded to the latest kernel v3.18.

I find that the apps' (VLC and Videos) volume controls seem to work
predictably in series with the keyboard controls.
The pop-up volume control slider in Videos is still hidden by the full
screen display. This could be solved by making the slider horizontal so
that it fits in the controls band but I am not too bothered about this
as the keyboard controls (Fn-F11 & F12) seem to work.

This might be a good time to close this bug report as I am not in a
position to comment further on how it was under the previous kernel.
