Just some more info which might help in hunting down the problem:

Firstly, this problem is driving me absolutely crazy!! My laptop freezes
so often, I'm loosing work and hair!!

System:
Compaq Evo N410c
1.2GHz P3 mobile
ati mobility radeon M6 LY (16MB)
512MB SDRAM
40GB HDD
NEC DVD-RW
Atheros AR5212 wifi with madwifi-ng drivers and wpa_supplicant

Running Ubuntu 6.06

It freezes very randomly. There seems to be no connection between the
programs I'm running and when it freezes. The only solution is to hold
the power button until the laptop powers off.

My system ran completely stable on breezy badger, but as soon as I
upgraded to Dapper Drake it started freezing! Why is the cause of the
problem not obvious to those that contributed to upgrading breezy to
dapper??

It was freezing with the original xorg.conf file which I think was set
to use ati driver. I have subsequently changed it to radeon drivers and
tried using mergedfb with a secondary monitor connected. So mergedfb
doesnt appear to be the problem.

I wish there were a higher level than "critical"
