To follw up, I had to do a fresh install of 14.04 to clear out the
multiple instances. I was having other wierd things going on anyway.
What I can say is that the problem, at least in my case because I was
running Nvidia 337.xx on 12.04 for crypto currency mining, may have
stemmed from not properly removing the manually installed Nvidia driver
prior to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04.
