Have added xorg edgers ppa repository, and am now using the correct nvidia driver 340.46. (see http://www.binarytides.com/install-nvidia-drivers-ubuntu-14-04/). Problem persists. Addition symptom - unchanged - is that when first logging on there is a period of grace during which the windows do clear away properly when closed or minimised - about two or three minutes.
