I have the exact same problem as he mentioned above...initially, i upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 ...I am also using unity... Then i tried doing a clean install and the same thing happens (so obviously it nothing to do with the upgrading factor)....
After the clean install, it initially worked fine...but once i did all the updates, the problem was there again, so it seems like it something caused this in the most recent updates (last few days)... No matter what you set it for, in the "brightness and lock" section of system settings, the screen will not turn off and go to black. Also having the same problem with lock as the previous report mentioned...
