There seems to be a solution (work-around) here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/180594/resume-to-login-screen-after- suspend/270598#270598. This describes how to show the (nicer) ubuntu login screen before suspend / hibernate. Must disable "Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate" option in power manager settings.
