Oh, and most people will need to insert another line in Christian's
workaround:

sudo iwlist scan
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid <networkname>
sudo iwconfig wlan0 key <your WEP key as a horrendous 26-digit hexadecimal 
number>
sudo dhclient wlan0
