This may well be an issue with xserver-xorg-core 1.16, or recent
xserver-xorg-video-intel.

I am getting the "_xgeWireToEvent: Unknown extension 148, this should
never happen." log messages as well, but only when the Epiphany web
browser is rendering HTML content with alpha channel < 1.0. When this is
happening, rendering performance degrades by orders of magnitude. If the
transparent content is hidden or the page is closed, the messages stop
and performance is restored.

This behaviour started occurring after upgrading to xserver-xorg-core
1.16.
