Tried the following several times which did not work: sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update
Then re-install the package. What did work was: cd /var/cache/apt/archives/ sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite linux-image-3.5.0-51-generic_3.5.0-51.77~precise1_i386.deb As James D suggested.
