Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better, and for filing the upstream bug and investigation
further.

I'm worried about the regression risk of pushing for an update to 2.4.10
in Ubuntu; the changelog looks scary here, I can see some entries that
suggest that there may be changes in behaviour and I don't want users
yelling at me for causing regressions (in any case, only the Technical
Board can approve this).

We can however push a minimal patch to Trusty and Utopic that fixes the
issue, if you can identify one. A bisection might help you here. I see
that you've provided the test case; I'd prefer for you to verify any
fixes with those test cases if possible.
