Public bug reported:

Manifesting as "No sound after Aug 31 2007 updates"
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3306199
and perhaps others,

$ uname -a
Linux pancake 2.6.20-16-lowlatency #2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 30 23:19:11 UTC 2007
x86_64 GNU/Linux
(-generic as well)

$ sudo insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-lowlatency/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
insmod: error inserting
'/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-lowlatency/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko': -1
Unknown symbol in module

from dmesg
[ 8223.036802] snd_hda_intel: disagrees about version of symbol snd_pcm_new
[ 8223.037173] snd_hda_intel: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_new
[ 8223.037467] snd_hda_intel: disagrees about version of symbol
snd_pcm_limit_hw_rates
[ 8223.037731] snd_hda_intel: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_limit_hw_rates
etc

Trying other random drivers, many seem to have version problems
[ 7938.904685] snd_als4000: disagrees about version of symbol snd_pcm_new
[ 7938.895373] snd_sb_common: disagrees about version of symbol snd_ctl_add
[ 7934.422564] snd_sonicvibes: disagrees about version of symbol snd_device_new
etc

So whoever updated the kernel seems to have forgotten to rebuilt the
sound modules (and who knows, maybe others).

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
