HPLIP Toolbox installed the printer into Administration/Printing using the HP backend. This HP backend is broken. Maybe this is not a problem, because 1000 is unsupported anyways, but despite this fact it works on Feisty. I removed the printer in HPLIP, and added it using Administration/Printing, now with the usb backend. It worked! Test page was printed correctly. I started to think why have I installed the printer using HPLIP on Feisty. My Feisty is Kubuntu, that can make a difference. I downloaded Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 live CD to see the situation there. HPLIP behaves exactly the same as on Ubuntu, no surprise. Let's forget about HPLIP, add the printer using System Settings/Printer. First I had to disable AppArmor to be able to start cupsys (separate bug). Then started the add printer wizard, which found the connected HP LaserJet 1000 on the usb port. Next, next, the wizard asked for it's vendor and model. Vendor is HP, but oops! There is no LaserJet 1000, nor 1018 and 1020. This is why I used HPLIP on Feisty. Let's add it manually. The select driver dialog did not mention, what kind of file it wants to open. First I tried to feed it with the firmware file. Then I figured out it must search for the ppd file. I searched the file system for it, and found it under /usr/share/ppd/foo2zjs. Tried to open the .ppd.gz with no success. Opened it with ark, extracted to .ppd, and then I was finally able to load it. The test page was successful.
I think it's currently hard to figure out for a Kubuntu user with a LaserJet 1000, 1018 or 1020 how to make it work. These models are present in the Ubuntu 'add printer' wizard, but not in Kubuntu. They should be added there, too. And if somebody wants to add his own ppd driver, the open dialog should indicate the expected extension (.ppd). And it should accept .ppd.gz as well. -- HP LaserJet 1000 not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136722 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
