I can confirm this bug. I upgraded to 14.10 about three weeks ago and the Software Updater has been complaining about not being able to install al updates for about a week now. I use "aptitude upgrade" to do the partial update but a "aptitude dist-upgrade" says it will remove compiz, unity and a lot of other ciritcal stuff. The cause seems to be in a metacity-common package version conflict.
