What I can confirm is that:
        
        1) The problem is not seen on the warty/x86_64 with atlas
        installed.
        
        2) The problem is not seen on dapper/i386/x86_64 without atlas.
        
        3) The problem is seen on dapper/i386/x86_64 with atlas.

Probably, but

Sounds as if it could be covering a multitude of sins.

Unfortunately attempting to do so hits this bug
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=315908 (which is what
the previous quote relates to). Even if you decline the resulting
invitation to abort the install, the installation hangs anyway.
