Does it happen for all emails you try and send, or just one?
In System Settings -> Network -> Network Proxy, what Method are you
using?
A log would help:
$ geary --debug --log-network > geary.log
Try sending an email, let the error message be displayed, then exit
Geary. Send the geary.log file to ge...@yorba.org.
