This problem has not occurred since, I believe, the -32 kernel upgrade. (I have to be tentative because it was always intermittent, but it did usually occur overnight and I have had periods of 1-2 days when the screen was locked without incident.)
Earlier this week I installed the new bios: 9SKT81AUS 06/17/2014 and the problem has not occurred since then.
